THE NACHTWEH FONDS, WENDE MUSEUM, LOS ANGELES, 2015

These works are multi-layered digital collages produced from photographs of Berlin Wall fragments in the collection of the Wende Museum, Los Angeles. The fragments were donated to the museum by Alwin Nachtweh, one of the foremost souvenir producers in Berlin during the Cold War. The Nachtweh collection consists of large chunks of the Berlin Wall, smaller souvenir sized fragments and still smaller bits of remaindered concrete and dust as found in the museum’s storage bins. The Wende Museum, is an important private museum focusing on Cold War history with an extensive collection of materials from former East Bloc countries.

The Nachtweh Fonds, Wende Museum, Los Angeles, was produced by Blake Fitzpatrick and Vid Ingelevics as a part of their long-term project, Freedom Rocks: the Everyday Life of the Berlin Wall.
